Cocktail Time

Sidecar

This drink was created at a bar in either London or Paris --the history isn't clear, like the history of most cocktails--it was invented near the end of World War I, and named after the attachment for a motorcycle. It uses the classic concept of mixing a strong flavored liquor with sour and sweet flavors. Variations on this cocktail can use cognac, Armagnac or bourbon. In a classic twist coming from a tip written in the 1930's, to further accentuate its sweet qualities, you can use sugar around the rim as a sweet addition and to further balance the sour properties of the drink. The biggest key to this classic is finding the right balance of sweet to sour for the base before any further additions such as fruit flavored brandies, juices, or fruits.
